Screw Compressors

Rotary Screw Air Compressors From Air Supply

All BOGE’s screw compressors offer maximum reliability and highly efficient operation. They are one of the most widely used air compressors for good reason, especially when supplied by a trusted company like ours.

Screw compressors function using positive displacement, where two rotors rotate in opposite directions to draw in air. As the volume between the rotors decreases, the air is compressed and released through the outlet.

They don’t have valves like reciprocating compressors do, which means they can work at high speeds and are continuously rated for 24/7/365 operation.

These compressors are used in a wide variety of industries, including:

  • Automotive
  • Brewing
  • Food packaging
  • Aerospace
  • Construction

Main benefits of screw compressors include:

  • Highly-efficient operation
  • Low energy costs
  • Continuous operation
  • High demand capabilities
  • Easy to maintain
  • Low noise levels due to silencing enclosures
  • Simple compression process

At Air Supply Manchester, our BOGE screw compressors are available in a broad power and design range. From 2.2 to 355 kW, we can supply machines of any size. The new S-4 models can be supplied as oil-injected or oil-free thanks to the innovative Bluekat technology. The huge variety of screw compressors on offer from BOGE are designed to meet the needs of your business.

To find the right air compressor for your needs, think about the following factors:

  • Demand for compressed air
  • Capacity required
  • Reliability and maintenance requirements of the air compressor

Speak to our experts about your requirements and we’ll find the best solution for your business.

Oil-Free Screw Compressor

Oil-free screw air compressors don’t require lubrication in the compression chamber because the screws don’t touch. The compressed air produced is oil-free and ideal for use in industries where clean air is a top priority.

Oil Injected Screw Compressor

As the screws in the compressor rub against one another, it creates heat. But with an oil-injected screw compressor, using oil as a coolant ensures that everything stays at a comfortable temperature.

FAQs for screw compressors

How long do screw compressors last?

A screw compressor typically lasts around 15 to 25 years, equalling up to roughly 100,000 operating hours. However, lifespan really comes down to how well they’re maintained – especially in heavy-duty environments.

Operating conditions also make a big difference. Environments with extreme temperatures and dust can wear down internal seals, components, and filters more quickly, therefore, shortening life expectancy.

Do screw compressors run constantly?

Yes, screw compressors are generally designed to run continuously rather than start and stop. In turn, this creates a steady flow of compressed air. It makes them an ideal compressor for industrial settings, where production is often constant.

Continuous airflow is achieved using two key processes. The first is rotary compression, in which air is trapped and compressed as it passes through the rotating screws. The second is a form of capacity control, enabled by variable-speed drives (VSDs). This allows the compressor to adjust its output without switching off.

How do screw compressors work?

A screw compressor uses two interlocking helical rotors (often called the male and female rotors) to compress air.

Here’s a step-by-step overview of how a screw compressor works:

  • Air intake: Air is drawn into the compressor through an inlet valve and into a sealed compression chamber.
  • Air trapping: As the two rotors turn in opposite directions, pockets of air become trapped and squeezed.
  • Compression: These trapped air pockets are carried along the length of the rotors. The space gradually narrows, which compresses the air.
  • Release: Once the air reaches the end of the rotors, it’s distributed at high pressure into a storage tank for use.

What is a rotary screw compressor used for?

A screw compressor is typically used in industrial environments, such as manufacturing plants. They’re also widely used across construction sites and the automotive industries. Their ability to run continuously without frequent stopping makes them particularly well-suited to demanding around-the-clock demands.

What are the main benefits of screw compressors?

There are several key advantages of screw compressors:

  • Quiet operation: Screw compressors operate much more quietly than most, due to their smooth rotational motion. This makes them a good fit for low-noise environments, such as medical facilities and pharmaceutical settings.
  • Energy efficiency: They’re generally more energy-efficient than many alternative compressor types, especially when fitted with Variable Speed Drives (VSD). VSD systems automatically adjust motor speed to match real-time air demand, rather than running at high speed during periods of low usage.
  • Durable: Screw compressors are known for their long service life. Compared with many other types of compressors, they’re built to handle heavy-duty environments and demanding conditions.

Do you offer both oilfree and oilinjected screw compressors?

Yes, we offer both oil-free and oil-injected screw compressors here at Air Supply Manchester. If you’d like to find out more about any of our compressor models, please get in touch.
