Why Is Proper Filtration Critical for Industrial Compressed Air Systems?

Compressed air is critical in a wide variety of industrial processes, but it’s not deemed 100% pure for all applications. According to studies, each cubic foot of compressed air could contain up to 10 contaminants. With this in mind, proper filtration is critical. However, it’s not as simple as choosing any system on the market. Most compressed air systems will require certain types of air filters, and that’s where Air Supply Manchester can advise.

What is an air filter system?

An air compressor filter is used in compressed air systems to ensure a clean air supply. It acts to remove pollutants before they reach pneumatic tools and processes. Even the most expensive air compressor systems can suffer performance issues without adequate filtration – and even pose safety risks in certain industries.

Common contaminants in compressed air

Some common contaminants found in compressed air are:

Water vapour/moisture

Water vapour is a key catalyst for bacterial growth. When microorganisms thrive in warm environments, they multiply. Therefore, the moisture content within compressed air means it’s no longer sterile. A moisture filter for compressed air is essential when strict quality standards are non-negotiable – such as in hospitals or food environments.

Dust particles

Although compressors are typically fitted with inlet filters, fine dust particles are small enough to pass through. Once inside, these particles can accumulate and spread downstream throughout the system.

Oil particles

Oil contamination is another challenge, particularly in facilities with oil-injected compressors. Microscopic oil vaporisers can be at risk of entering the compressed air supply. And while it’s the least severe contaminant in contrast to those above, it’s still a cause for concern in many processes.

Why is air compressor filtration important?

There are several reasons why compressed air filtration cannot be ignored in certain industrial facilities, including:

Quality standards

For many applications, the industry-standard ISO 8573 regulation comes into play. This standard outlines acceptable limits for moisture, dust and oil ingress. By classifying air purity, manufacturers have a clear guide for the correct cleanliness of the air. This is especially crucial in environments such as pharmaceuticals, and food and beverages.

Cutting energy costs

Poor filtration increases pressure drops and forces the compressor motor to work harder than necessary, which can skyrocket your energy bills. Instead, the correct filtration system minimises the resistance of working internal parts so that the air can flow sufficiently.

Protecting internal components

Contaminants can play havoc with the compressor’s internal components. Particles may begin to cover the likes of pneumatic cylinders and valves, which can speed up everyday wear and tear. So, it’s wise to invest in an air filter system to reduce ongoing maintenance and improve the system’s lifespan.
