What Are Turbo Compressors & How Do They Work?

For industrial business owners, compressed air is an essential component of daily operations. However, traditional compressed air systems can be bulky, maintenance-heavy, and costly to run.

If you are looking to optimise your facility’s efficiency and lower your overheads, you might be asking yourself: what is turbo compressor technology, and is it the right fit for my business?

In this guide, our compressed air experts will explore the ins and outs of these innovative machines and the benefits they can bring to your industrial operations.

What is a turbo compressor?

A turbo compressor is a highly advanced, oil-free pneumatic system designed to deliver compressed air with unparalleled efficiency and cost savings. Unlike traditional screw compressors, a turbo compressor operates using a high-speed permanent magnet motor that can achieve speeds exceeding 100,000 rpm.

BOGE turbo compressor design has revolutionised the compressor industry, reducing the machine to half the size, prolonging service life, removing several components, and integrating cooling systems. This means there is a very high energy density and an extremely small footprint from your workspace. Efficiency is at the forefront of the design, ensuring your production is completed at the best rate and quality possible.

How do turbo compressors work?

To understand how these systems function, it helps to look at the mechanics of a turbo centrifugal compressor. A turbo air compressor works similarly to a turbocharger in a combustion engine. However, instead of using exhaust gases to rotate a turbine, a highly compact electric motor drives the system. This motor spins high-quality titanium impellers located at the ends of a drive shaft, which work in conjunction with a diffusor and spiral housing to generate compressed air.

One of the most innovative aspects of the BOGE turbo is the complete elimination of traditional mechanical bearings and gears. Instead, the drive shaft is supported by air-cushioned bearings or innovative magnetic levitation technology. This means the shaft operates virtually wear-free, without the need for external energy, lubricants, or expensive electronic controls.

Additionally, as the intake air is drawn into the system, an intelligent cooling system uses this negative pressure to cool the motor and the impellers, eliminating the need for a separate fan motor. Depending on your requirements, the compressor will use multiple stages; high-pressure models pass the air through three consecutive compressors, while low-pressure models typically use two.

By simplifying the compressor design, BOGE has created a more efficient and compact compressor system.

Key benefits of turbo compressors for industrial businesses

Investing in a turbo air compressor offers several significant advantages:

  • 100% oil-free operation: Turbo compressors don’t have a lubrication system, an oil pump, or gears, meaning the system guarantees Class 0 oil-free compressed air. This is particularly critical for industries with strict hygiene and contamination standards, such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and automotive painting.
  • Drastically reduced maintenance: By eliminating gears and oil, turbo compressors significantly reduce the wear and tear of parts. With fewer components, you’ll experience lower maintenance costs, shorter scheduled downtimes, and a longer service life.
  • Unmatched energy efficiency: The air-cushioned motor shaft guarantees maximum aerodynamic efficiency, while integrated frequency converters adapt the volume flow rate to your actual demand. These systems also come equipped with optional heat recovery systems that can reclaim up to 90% of the energy used, repurposing it to heat process water up to 90°C.
  • Compact and quiet: The permanent magnet motors possess a very high energy density, allowing for an incredibly compact design that saves valuable facility space. The lack of mechanical friction results in a significantly lower sound pressure level compared to traditional compressors.
